Symbols & Symbolism
on my Web sites

I hereby dedicate this page to my younger brother who is always needling me about Klingons not being real. While Klingons as a true and extant species are not real, what they and their symbols represent very much are. To that end I will endeavor to explain my choice of Klingon-oriented symbols and symbolism while following the "KISS"1 philosophy.

I chose Volk for my Klingon name for three reasons:

  • 1) In the beginning, words had meaning (especially names like Cooper, Hunter, King, Smith, etc.) To be given a name was a GREAT honor. Thus, it came to be that to speak a name was to honor the original bearer of that name. Therefore, in the days of The Julius Caesar the "powers that be" decided to honor real and mythical Beings alike by naming the new months and days-of-the-week after them.
    Following that train of thought:
    • a) Augustus and 'The' Julius Caesar are honored each time we speak the names August and July,
    • b) Wednesday was named to honor Odin (Woden's Day),
    • c) Even most of the planets and moons in our Solar System were/are named in honor of various Deities from Mythology.
    • d) Saturday was named to honor the Satyr, Pan (Satyr Day). For more info on this subject you can consult any encyclopedia, "Information Please" Almanac, or contact Alchemy Mindworks on the subject of Calendar History.
    • e) Even today, to honor our ancestors, we name our children after them;

  • 2) I admire the wolf's family values; and

  • 3) I chose the phonetic spelling of the Russian word for Wolf, Bolk, because it sounded more Klingon than "Wolf" in any other language I was able to explore.

As my Klingon Persona, Volk (Wolf), I have chosen the klan name of Hunter (wamwI) and those future members of my Klan will be given the names (in Russian) of such Hunters as Fox, Bear, Leopard, Tiger, etc.

I borrowed and improved the wolf image from the IKV Wolf of Nova Scotia. I originally sent them 2 e-mails with no response. Since then, I have been unable to access their e-mail at all. Does anyone know what has become of them or how I can contact any of the last members?

Clockwise in this symbol:
  1. 3) The lower right blade represents "Duty,"
  2. 2) The lower left blade represents "Loyalty," and
  3. 1) The upper-most blade represents "Above All, Honor."

I placed these ba'tleths2 point "upward and outward" for several reasons:

  • 1) To represent 'The House of...'"
  • 2) As in Earther(Terran) horseshoe lore, to represent good fortune, and
  • 3) It is not wise to sleep with a ba'tleth, or a sword, aimed at ones head.

The first symbol here is the KAG3 emblem for the Primary Science Department.
The second symbol is my variation for the Auxiliary Science Department. If anyone can come up with a better idea please let me know.

These Enlarged animated flames represent Hearth and Home.

This last symbol is the KAG emblem for the rank of Sergeant

My basic, meaning-filled image:

All Background images are my photographs unless otherwise noted ... like Preston Starr's photo of M31.

FootNotes:
1 Keep It Simple Silly.
2 translated, Ba'tleth means "Blade of Honor."
3 A true and extant community service fan club based on the fictitious species known throughout the world as Klingons. I mean, Why not? The NEMO Society is a true and extant organization named after a fictitious character created by Jules Verne.

Afterthought:
Hmmm, now here's a thought...how about a couple of kids' super, or at least Scooby-type, heroes called Star Wolf
and Astro Pup.

Why Klingon, or Trek for that matter?

We all have a need to belong and to get away from the house once in a while, their Ba'tleth practice group met at a convenient location nearby, they met at a convenient time that did not interfere with my work or class schedules, and they invited me. Also, Trek™ groups are usually Community Service-oriented organizations that like to have responsible fun (e.g. Ba'tleth practice, Regional Olympics, etc.), and raise money for worthy causes such as The Birds of Prey Foundation (Hawkwood), the River Legacy Foundation (the River Legacy Cardboard Boat Regatta), and storm victims; and they are dedicated to Gene Roddenberry's vision of a better future for the Human Race.

Why else volunteer for anything?

If you don't enjoy being there (anywhere) you won't be inspired to do your best.

If you're not going to do your best, Why be there (anywhere)?

Finally:
Some people say that Klingon is not a real language. It is just made up. To that I say; well, so are Sign Languages, Esperanto, and even the Binary and Hexadecimal codes. The Klingon language is a study in the Science of Linguistics.
